Women 'joining in' online poker surge

More and more women are gambling on poker and blackjack sites online, making them the fastest growing demographic of new players.
Although traditionally a macho, male-dominated world, the number of women gambling online has surged over the last three years. Three years ago only three per cent of players online were female – today that figure is 20 per cent.
Playing anonymously online has its appeal for female gamers, as playing at a poker table in real life can be quite intimidating for a new player, particularly for women.
Online poker sites actively promote the concept of "playing in your pyjamas", which is often another incentive for female gamers.
"The thing I love about online play is you can be dressed any way you want and do your nails at the same time," US-based Francine Brandler told the Sun newspaper.
Online gaming sites are also catching on, with an influx of female-only poker sites now available
Sites such as pokergirluk.com, which offers "a relaxed and totally informal girl's only environment" in which women can learn how to master the game, means female gamers can hone their skills in a 'friendly' environment being taught in women-only classes, before pitting their wits against the world on other sites.
