'Cheating' warning for online poker
[2005-11-07]

One of the world's most famous poker 'cheats', Richard Marcus, has claimed online poker could be headed for a fall if 'poker bots' and other methods of cheating online are not addressed.

Mr Marcus, who conned some of the world's biggest casinos in Atlantic City, Monte Carlo, London and Las Vegas, now writes books about his experiences.

He warns the presence of online 'bots', which pretend to be real players but are in fact computer programmes, could seriously damage the future of online poker.

"There is so much cheating going on," he told LaunchPoker.com.

"Within a short amount of time we are going to see about one in a hundred people playing honestly. The rest will be using bots or it will be computers playing against computers."

With online poker set to top the $1 billion mark in the US, the potential business revenue of the industry is also under threat as real people could end up shying away from potentially "unfair" games.

However, online gaming website PartyPoker.com claims there is nothing to worry about.

A spokesman told LaunchPoker.com: "I can't speak for other sites but the people sitting there on our virtual poker tables are very real."
