The government is not doing enough to regulate the growing online gambling industry in the eyes of the public, a new survey reveals. Four out of five people believe that more could be done to safeguard players who use gambling sites, according to consultancy XTN Data. It asked 1,000 internet users about their perceptions of gambling and the gambling industry and the site that they used. More than a third of respondents (35 per cent) believed that gambling sites based overseas were less trustworthy than those in located in Britain. Almost half of those surveyed recognised the Party Poker brand, which floated for £4.64 billion last year and is used by more than a third of online poker players. But whilst more people planned to gamble more online, over half of those surveyed admitted they did not know how to play many of the casino games on offer and found that many casinos did not give sufficient instructions. Greig Harper, founder of XTN Data, said that more needs to be done to recruit new members to the game. He said: "As online gambling becomes more mainstream gaming operators need to do everything they can to attract new users including teaching them basic strategies for games." The introduction of the Gambling Act next year will allow internet casinos to be based in the UK for the first time. Under the new law, gambling websites must ensure they have sufficient measures in place so that they are not accessed by those under the age of 18.
