Poker Hands
Poker is a popular game played by thousands of people all over the world. Before attempting play with real money, it is vital to know importance of hand rankings in poker. A poker hand denotes a game with one or more betting sequences and a showdown, or it can mean a set of five cards. It can also denote a player's five cards in hand.

Before recognizing hand rankings one must know that value of cards. Ace is the highest ranked, followed by K, Q, and J down to two, which is the lowest, ranked. Single cards play an important role in deciding the winner among players when no deciding combinations are possible.

A particular suit gets no priority over others. However, cards belonging to a specific suit determine formation of a winning sequence. If more than one player has the winning combination of hands, there is a tie and they share the prize.

Usually a hand comprises five cards and in case, there are more than five cards, the ranking is as per some five-card sequence that determines the winner and the balance cards are useless. One must know that the group of cards used in the sequence formation determines the ranking and then single cards decide the winner if there is a tie.

We now discuss the types of hand rankings from the highest to the lowest. When a player has five cards, namely Ace, King, Queen, Jack and a Ten of the same suit forming a pattern, they form a Royal flush. This hand ranking enjoys the maximum value. Next is the straight flush that is a pattern of any five cards in a sequential pattern and of the same suit. Four of a kind has four cards of the same value but different coats forming a pattern.

A full house has three cards of one value and two of another. A simple flush has five cards of the same coat but in random order. A straight has five cards of different coats forming a pattern, while three of a kind features three cards of the same value forming a sequence. A two-pair has two pairs of cards and in case of a tie; the higher pair decides the winner. In case the higher pair is the same, the lower pair decides and finally the person with the higher last card is the winner. A one-pair has just a single pair of two cards of the same value but different coats. A no pair is a hand with no pairing of cards and this is the lowest ranked hand.

The above ranking is as per the chance of occurrence of a particular hand. Royal Flush has the least chance of occurring and is the most valuable. In case a game uses an extra card in the form of a joker, another sequence that is five of a kind is possible. This sequence is giving a higher ranking than the Royal flush.

The above hand rankings are for a normal poker game and they change with the type of poker played. For instance, in low poker people aim to get the lowest hand ranking to win the game. In the high low variation, the person with then highest ranking and with the lowest ranking share the prize. However, one must be familiar with the basic hand rankings to play any variation of poker.
